Umm...so...is the trip still on?

I get that a lot. Many of you have heard/seen that Kenya is in turmoil. Government corruption, broken promises and years of oppression have come to a boil and the cost has been very high. Please keep Kenya in your prayers and those who have lost loved ones are mourning and the country is trying to put itself back together.

The short answer is, yes, we're still planning on going. There are precautions that have to be taken, as would be at any time. We are not planning to go until August, and by then things will have calmed down. We plan to spend the first two weeks of August there and have a tentative itinerary, including some down time and a short safari. Please let me know if you are interested in being part of this team, whether that be going, praying, trip planning or fund raising. Hope you'll join us on the Mara!

Mmmmm Good!

Our dinner on the 8th was a great success. The food was fantastic and we all worked together to prepare it with the help of the lovely Helen Obande. She shared some great information on Kenya and what the situation is like there. The energy around the project was very positive and I look forward to moving forward with it.

Here's the latest info:

- The dates have been set for the first two weeks of August 2008. The exact days will be nailed down when we are able to make travel plans
- The teams we will be forming will be: prayer, travel planning, fund raising, participants
- We will hold a brunch meeting and formalize teams and team leaders on Saturday, January 12th from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, location TBD.

Please remember that anyone is welcome to participate in this trip. We are looking to take 10 people over and will be raising the funds needed for the trip. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or ideas.

Why you should come to dinner

I know, I know. We're moving, it's the holidays, life is crazy - why should you think about coming to dinner on Saturday, December 8th? Here's why:

1. It's' going to be VERY fun. We're all going to bring ingredients and prepare authentic Kenyan food together - children are welcome!

2. Authentic Kenyan food is DELICIOUS! I've had it. Trust me.

3. There are many ways to be part of this trip if you don't think you can actually go, such as prayer, fund-raising, travel arrangements, etc.

4. It's a way for our community and others in the larger SF Bay Area community to join together for a common good cause with some really great food.

The place: 1040 Mariposa, San Francisco
The time: 5pm - 8pm (plenty of time to go out and hit one of those holiday parties afterward)

BE THERE!!!

Trip to Kenya

Hello! Welcome to the official blog of the Mission Bay Community Church trip to Bungoma, Kenya, in August 2008. This blog will contain updates, prayer requests, photos, plans, and all relevant information for our trip next summer. Questions about this trip? Here are some answers:

Q: When are you going?
A: Most likely August 2008, but specific dates haven't been nailed down - stay tuned!

Q: How long is the trip?
A: Two weeks

Q: How much will it cost?
A: It should be between $3,000 & $4,000 per person, including airfare, transportation, food and lodging.

Q: Do I have to come up with all that money?
A: No. We have sources from our denomination that will help and we will also be hosting some fund-raising events to help defray the costs.

Q: Who can go on this trip?
A: ANYONE! Don't feel like you have to be part of our church to go. We will be having meetings and gatherings of folks who want to go and we'll have plenty of time to get to know each other.

I hope this gives some basic info on what's going to happen. Add this to your reader and keep checking back as we get ready to serve the people of Bungoma.
